A complex restoration project

On either side of the doors, celebrated figures bearing trumpets stand on starry globes.

The decor of the Berlin bears witness to the pomp of the young Brazilian Empire. Its splendour had become tarnished over the years, however, and eleven specialists were needed to restore it. Between 1984 and 1996, the wooden parts were consolidated, the paintwork cleaned, and the material restored. The leather straps were also treated, the missing parts replaced, and the chassis dismantled and checked.

This long process was made possible by support from the French Ministry of Culture, Hermès, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
