This home-made machine is of flesh-coloured linen and leather, stuffed with cotton. The life-size demonstration mannequin, in a gynaecological position, is supported by an iron frame. The upper section opens so that the doll can be positioned inside the mother’s womb. Various strings and straps serve to simulate the stretching of the birth canal and perineum, to demonstrate the process of childbirth.
Radiography has revealed that a veritable bone structure - a young woman’s pelvis - is hidden beneath the fabric, silk and ribbon.
