Other ivory versions

The Dieppe Castle Museum also has another, smaller (13.2cm high) ivory version of the ‘Lady of the Vow’ more typical of Dieppe production. Carefully finished, this small version in a similar style, could indeed be attributed to Brunel’s workshop. A private collector, an avid reader of the local press, informed us that he owns another version of this statue, in a clumsier style, but perfectly illustrating the success of sculpted monuments in the great urban centres or former palaces, in the image of the statues of the gardens of Versailles, and other places, so often carved in bronze or ivory.
It has influenced small scuplture for several centuries, which thus found part of its outlet in the reproduction of great works of monumental sculpture for the wider public.
