The Flowers of the Café RICHE

The panel entitled Flowers, produced in collaboration with the sculptor Jules Blanchard, is a fragment of the decoration of the Café Riche in Paris. This elegant young woman holding a bouquet had a companion piece: Dance, by sculptor Jean Hugues.

These reliefs, commissioned by architect Albert Ballu to decorate the façade of this famous establishment on the Boulevard des Italiens, were placed on either side of the front door, and the café interior was also splendidly decorated: the mezzanine boasted seventeen mosaic panels, illustrating the small trades of Paris (from cartoons by painter Jean-Louis Forain). The decoration of the Café Riche was completed in 1894, then taken down and dispersed from 1898.
