This bronze statue, over 90 cm tall, was discovered at Vieil-Evreux (Eure), where it must once have decorated the forum (marketplace).
This splendid image of Jupiter demonstrates his special status; as king of the gods, Jupiter had to project an image of power.
He is therefore represented as a well-built, middle-aged man. His muscular frame reflects his power, which is why he was often portrayed naked (as he is here), or wearing only a cloak tied around his waist or thrown over his shoulder. He originally held an object in each hand (a thunderbolt and a spear), but these have not survived.
