The popularity of Mars

This blue agate intaglio, found in Rouen, portrays Mars with all his military equipment. He is shown standing, holding his spear in one hand, while his shield lies at his feet.
It is interesting to see that the god could be represented on this type of support. These semi-precious stones were worn in rings or brooches, and probably indicated a person’s attachment to a particular divinity.
The engraving is fine enough for us to distinguish the detail of all the god’s weapons, but not enough for us to identify the type of image of Mars we have here. In any case, this god was obviously very popular in the Roman world, and more particularly in Roman Gaul.
